1. Reminder: Please find which group you belong to here.

2. Join the movie pre-watching discussion on VoiceThread. Your groups' VoiceThread links are posted Here. Once you join the VoiceThread group, you will be able to join your group's Week 2 discussion. The discussion questions are: â€‹

  • What does "coming of age" mean to you? How do you think it can be influenced by social and political events?

  • In your cultural context, how do movies usually portray social political events? 

  • How might the setting of each movie impact the coming of age experiences of the characters? Are there any aspects of the setting (such as the geography, climate, or cultural traditions) that you think might be particularly important to the stories being told?

  • Can you think of any other movies or cultural works from each country that explore similar themes? 

  • What is the most pressing social-political issue in your society that influences your worldview or value system?

  • Characters: Note the main characters and their motivations, relationships, and character arcs. You may also want to note any standout performances or character development.

  • Themes: Consider the themes of the movie and how they are explored throughout the film. This may include moral or ethical issues, social or political commentary, or other overarching ideas.

  • Cultural context: Take note of any cultural references, traditions, or symbols that are relevant to the movie's setting or storyline. Consider how these cultural elements may affect the film's reception in different regions or among different audiences.

  • Historical context: Consider the historical period in which the movie is set, as well as the historical context in which the movie was made. Take note of any cultural or political events or movements that may have influenced the movie's themes or style.

  • Visual style: Consider the visual style of the movie, including its use of color, lighting, and camera techniques. Note any visual motifs or symbolism that may be relevant to the movie's social-cultural themes or messages.

  • Representation: Consider how different social groups are represented in the movie, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social class. Take note of any stereotypes or biases that may be present in the movie's portrayal of these groups.

  • Audience reception: Consider how different audiences may interpret or respond to the movie's social-cultural themes. Note any controversies or debates surrounding the movie's message or portrayal of social groups.
