U.S.-Chile COIL Project: Exploring Movie as a Form of Visual Culture 

Project partners: FIU students (Miami, FL, U.S.A.) in ENC 3378 (co-listed as ENC 6745) Writing across Borders course and UDP students (Santiago RM, Chile) in English Speaking Countries' Culture I (EDE 1025).

COIL Process

During the semester students in assigned teams will work together and create multimodal posters to present their comparative reviews of two movies. Students will first watch the two movies with similar broad themes and summarize the plot of the movies. Students will share their personal perspectives as movie viewers, asking clarification questions to each other so that they have a full understanding of the movies. Students from each country will be the cultural insiders of that country to provide “insider” perspectives. The students will then choose a multimodal genre for a comparative movie review of the two movies. Peer review opportunities will be provided and the instructor will also follow up with students to provide group feedback. 

Our COIL Project Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to develop intercultural written communication skills with a real audience from a different rhetoric background.

  2. Students will be able to effectively engage in cross-cultural written communication. 

  3. Students will be able to enhance their team problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

  4. Students will be able to analyze the social-cultural aspects and compare them to theirs. 

  5. Students will be able to recognize cultural influences to describe certain social- cultural issues in movies from different countries. 

  6. Students will be able to take a cultural lens to identify features of movies as a visual culture. 

  7. Students will be able to identify social issues reflected in the movies and discuss the cultured ways social issues are depicted in movies. 

  8. Students will be able to compare and contrast cultural values reflected in movies.
